The Pittsburg Public Library Board of Trustees announces the retirement of Library Director Bev Clarkson, effective September 30, 2026.
Clarkson began her career at the Pittsburg Public Library in 2000, working in Adult Services & Reference and later taking on responsibilities in Youth Services. In 2004, she and former Youth Services Supervisor Gail Sheppard established the Library’s Young Adult Department.
While working full-time and raising her children, Clarkson earned a Master of Library Science from Emporia State University. She was promoted to Assistant Director in 2008 and has served as Library Director since 2013.
Under Clarkson’s leadership, the Library expanded its collections, programming, and technology services. She introduced Libby and oversaw the growth of collections beyond traditional materials to include the Library of Things, StoryBoxes, hotspots, and Seed Library. Programming also grew, with opportunities for patrons of all ages to learn, create, and connect. Clarkson herself has presented well over a thousand programs during her years at the Library, including children’s puppet programs for more than 20 years.
Clarkson also prioritized access to technology and technology assistance for the community. Most recently, she initiated the Library’s newspaper digitization project, an ongoing effort to preserve Pittsburg’s historic newspapers and make them searchable and accessible for generations to come.
Throughout her tenure, Clarkson has spearheaded numerous projects and initiatives while remaining dedicated to preserving the Library’s historic building and ensuring it continues to support modern library services. She has also served as Executive Director of the Pittsburg Public Library Foundation, which has grown by more than 300% during her tenure.
“When I look back over my years at the Library, I am incredibly proud of how we have continued to grow and change while staying focused on what matters most—serving our community,” Clarkson said. “Whether it’s putting the right book in someone’s hands, creating a program that brings people together, or helping someone use technology with confidence, it has always been about making the Library a place where everyone can find something they need. I have been fortunate to work with an amazing staff and to serve a community that truly values its library. It has been a privilege to be part of it.”
In retirement, Clarkson plans to travel with her husband, Jamie, spend more time with family and friends, and, of course, enjoy plenty of time for good books.
In June, the Pittsburg Public Library Board of Trustees approved a hiring committee and began a statewide search for the Library’s next director. Following the application and interview process, the Board selected current Assistant Director AnnDee Peterson to serve as Library Director beginning October 1, 2026.
During more than 25 years at the Library, Peterson has served in a variety of roles, including Assistant Director since 2015. She has managed the Library’s Computer & Web Services and Patron Services departments and helped develop and maintain the Library’s website, social media presence, and monthly Calendar of Events.
“Pittsburg Public Library has been my professional home for more than 25 years, and I just love working here. I care deeply about this Library, our staff, and the community we serve,” Peterson said. “I am grateful for everything I have learned from Bev and for the work we have done together over the years. I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue that work and lead the Library into its next chapter.”
The Pittsburg Public Library Board of Trustees will host a Retirement Reception Open House honoring Clarkson on Tuesday, September 29, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Library’s Meeting Room. The community is invited to stop by, visit with Clarkson, and welcome Peterson as the Library’s incoming director. Cake and refreshments will be served.
