From the Stacks
By Carol Ann Robb, PPL Reference Librarian

After a brief hiatus, adult programming at the Library returns with two crowd favorites next week.

On Monday, we are re-opening Chez Libby, PPL’s premier book bistro, for another Book Tasting where readers are introduced to a diverse menu of books specially prepared by our library chefs. If you suffer from reading repetition, i.e., picking up the same type of book over and over, unsure what else is out there, then this is the event for you.

Our book chefs have carefully curated reading lists that will whet your appetite for new and flavorful reads. Staff all have different tastes so I have no doubt everyone who attends will find some new favorites. You’ll be able to choose from indigenous authors, retellings of favorite classics, bookish delights, new gothic tales, contemporary romances featuring strong female leads, and books based on folklore and myths. Director Bev Clarkson will demonstrate how to use the Libby app to your best advantage and I’ll offer up my favorites from thirty-plus years of filling the stacks. Of course, there will also be edible sweet treats (after all, one can work up an appetite talking about books).

And if that’s not enough, we’ll also have a drawing for a bag of assorted books. Chez Libby will open at 6:00 p.m. for an hour of come and go tasting and I guarantee you’ll leave with enough suggestions to get you through the rest of 2024.

I’ve been asked if “A Cup of Conversation” would return and I’m happy to respond with a resounding “Yes!” We’re kicking off the new season next Thursday, August 15, with the return of our first ever guest, Paula Baker. A lot has happen since the Freeman Health Systems CEO visited us last September and she has graciously agreed to come and give an update on what she’s been doing as well as her future plans. If you missed her before, here’s your chance to meet and learn more about Paula, the most successful of my classmates. She’s a truly gifted person and nice to boot. Be sure to join us at 10:00 a.m. next Thursday.

My programming days are fast coming to a close but as these two events show, I plan to go out with a bang. Come be a part of the fun.
