From the Stacks
By Carol Ann Robb, PPL Reference Librarian

2024 is more than half over and since I won’t be sharing an end-of-the-year list of my favorite reads, I decided six months worth of top books is in order. As always, I am listing them in alphabetical order by author’s last name (because that’s how we do things at the library) and I liked them all equally, more or less.
• “Calamity of Souls” by David Baldacci: a stand-alone novel that wasn’t always easy to read
•“The Women” by Kristin Hannah: again, difficult subject matter but a well-told story
• “Funny Story” by Emily Henry: the author redeemed herself after her last effort, plus it has a library angle (sort of)
• “Berry Picker” by Amanda Peters: a debut novel that hit all the right notes

• “Marlow Murder Club” by Robert Thorogood: if you like Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club, then grab this first book in the series

Honorable mention goes to “Dog Day Afternoon” by David Rosenfelt since he’s one of my all-time favorites, as well as Lucy Gilmore’s “The Lonely Heart Book Club” because I read it again this year for a book discussion so it wasn’t a new book for me in 2024.

I’ll be sharing more of my favorite reads from the past 30-some years at our Second Annual Book Tasting on Monday, August 12. Staff book chefs will present a variety of offerings to tempt your reading taste buds as you discover new-to-you titles in a variety of genres. Mark your calendars now so you won’t miss this fun event.
